Biography

Portrait of Clément Mitéran, contemporary artist.

Clément Mitéran (b. 1984) lives and works in the Paris region. His practice develops at the intersection of experimental photography and contemporary mosaic. Following philosophy studies at Université Paris VIII, he graduated from the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli (Italy) in 2008. Focused entirely on portraiture, his work confronts the photographic image—defined by its capacity for reproduction and spatial dissemination—with the medium of mosaic, characterized by its uniqueness and persistence through time. By rendering marble or white gold surfaces photosensitive, or by physically intervening on the support through repentirs, abrasions, and deliberate choices of scale and rhythm, he gives the image the consistency of a textured body. The face becomes a visual palimpsest where questions of collective memory are re-enacted.
This attention to the physical dimension of the artwork naturally extends to his exhibition design. By extracting his pieces from the traditional white cube to immerse them in the dim light of site-specific installations, Mitéran invites the viewer into a slowed-down contemplation. Whether through the intimate experience of candlelight or a intentionally muted lighting scheme, the space fosters a direct, sensory relationship with the works. This staging of disappearance informs his recent projects, from his participation in the unRepresented by Approche art fair (2024) to the exhibitions “Tout y parlerait / À l’âme en secret” (2025) and “Échos des visages” at the Lercaro Foundation in Bologna (2026), following his solo exhibition at the National Museum of Ravenna (2017).
